XviD Encoding

[edit] Introduction

Encoding is done with the the video editor of your choice.
As always in this case we recommend the superb virtualdub


[edit] Instructions

These instructions are based on virtualdub

  • Download XviD
  • Load Virtual Dub
  • Open your uncompressed or loseless compressed AVI into Virtual Dub
  • Select Video/Full Processing Mode
  • Select Video/Compression
  • Follow First Pass screenshots below for XviD settings
  • Do File / Save as Avi ..
  • Select a save location and click OK
  • Select Video/Compression
  • Follow Second Pass screenshots below (do not close vdub or re-open your avi, its already there)
  • Select Audio/Full Processing Mode
  • Select Audio/Compression
  • Also follow the Lame MP3 settings below
  • Now do File / Save as Avi .. and choose the location to save your file to
  • You now have a XviD compressed movie

[edit] What Does This Do?

The above does a proper 2-pass encode on your video.
The first pass writes to a text file at the root of C: with its impression of the video.
The second pass uses this text file to do a better encode overall.
